In the morning
The many birds
Sang
Like children
On a playground
Make noise—
Because they can,
Just to hear themselves,
Or because they haven’t learned
To keep quiet
And only talk
When it’s intelligent
But these are mountain birds
Robins and finches
Nesting in the pines
And the rafters of cabins
Picking worms from the soft soil
They lack the education
That the pigeons in the city
Have learned
To keep quiet, conserve their energy,
And eat trash when they can
