Jido

Was a drummer
I locked eyes with
Whose band played
On the open roof
Of the restaurant
During dinner

Afterward
He was outside
Drinking a beer
And smoking a cigarette

My friend nudged me
To say hi to him
Which is how
I learned his name

My Spanish was bad
And his English
Was just good enough
To ask me
If I liked music
I said yes
And then I said sí
He asked if I played an instrument
I said no

But wish that I could have said yes
So that we would have had
Something to talk about
Though I wouldn’t have been able
To express myself anyways

So we shared a brief
Mostly-wordless moment
After the sun had gone down
In the street of Cabo

He drank his bottled beer
Leaning against the wall
Outside of the restaurant
Waiting for his band to go back on

And I, full from dinner
With my hands in my pockets
Feeling much less talented
Than the man I was admiring

He wasn’t even aware
Of how perfectly himself
He was being
